Our Relationship with our Horses often begins similar to our Human Relationships and as time goes on it continues with like patterns of ebb and flow, beginnings and endings. There is a common quote about relationships: ‘The person that loves the least controls the relationship’, and my history has proven that it’s the same with Horses and Humans.
My personal experience is that I love more than my Horses do, so when it comes to expanding our relationship, I feel like I instigate the effort and language necessary to further our communication and understanding. Its interesting to note, I often describe Horses as what draws me into the ‘Mystery’, meaning, experiences that are more sensory, more intuitive and intangible, with Horses I am more innately Present.
So perhaps in my journey with Horses that is why my Horses have always appeared to love the least, one of our agreements this lifetime is that I need the Mystery, meaning what I see as the World between the tangible and the intangible. A space where I lay aside overthinking and I am more physical and intuitively aware, and Horses constantly lead me there. I want to be with them, so I enter the Mystery. When I don’t follow, I get all in my head and we suffer disconnect and disappointments for us both. When we are disconnected, we lack the full benefit of our relationship thereby forfeiting much of the benefit intrinsic to the gift of having a Horse.
Whatever our role within the relationship, Romance is quintessential to keeping us engaged and moving forward in our life together, Romance keeps us interested in knowing the other as we evolve or go through various life transitions.
One of my favorite things about my Horses is the way they so willingly lower their head so that I can put the halter on. To me, this is seductive, this powerful, spirited creature invites me to capture their head so that I will have some power to lead/control them. And they do it willingly. With this simple act, they seduce me, in that moment I see them as my consort, they are Romancing me, inviting me to conspire with them in our time together. They acknowledge that when they are haltered, we well be together, we will collaborate because they have allowed me to place a tether on them. And they have lassoed my heart, I am captivated by their seductive surrender to my desires, I am tethered to this Romance.

The Invitation
Romance doesn’t die of natural causes, it is starved to death or buried alive. Commit to the Romantic notion that you save a specific piece of yourself for this Horse, it is sweet and sacred for just the two of you. See if you can notice ways that your Horse is Romancing you, however covert, or elusive, they offer ways to connect with them.
