I see my Horses as synergistic with my own innate Spirituality. We share a common bond, a type of Mystical Faith in our relationship. For us, it’s not just Horse and rider, or Horse and caretaker, its seeing each other as a catalyst in the process of our own Spiritual understanding and evolution.
For those of us with this belief system, Horses can draw us into a world a little more ethereal. While we strive to be present with them; it seems to me that the real Magick and benefit comes when we are between the worlds of Horse and Human. This has taken me years to become mindful enough in the moment to participate in the mysterious energy that is present when we are between the worlds.
For me it happens most naturally when I groom them, or while taking them out to hand graze. I usually find myself surrounded with a timeless, crystalline energy that connects us privately, Soulfully and intimately. In this space the language of silence is both fluent and clearly heard. I am both lost in the moment and yet acutely present with my Horse. When I am present in this space of Intuitive Awareness, I notice that my Horse relates to me more honestly, she is more malleable. When I show up with busy thoughts and agendas there is more disconnect and agitation because the Horse does not recognize me as the Beloved that I desire to be. When I am in this place in between the worlds that belongs to both of us, we take the ordinary and make it extraordinary, we create Alchemy. And sometimes the Alchemical process is not a smooth one, there are failed experiments and eruptions, but it is Alchemy none the less. Here we have permission to ask for cooperation, compromise, possibility and forgiveness. We have both learned how to search for our brilliance. We have both had to learn to forgive.
My great challenge has been to remain in this space of Intuitive Awareness and Possibility when I ride. Although I have moments of it, more often it gets compromised because of my agenda, fear of a spook, or judgments that we are not as accomplished as I think we should be. Occasionally when I or my Horse is fragmented and disconnected it gets lost altogether.
While the idea of being in perfect sync with them all the time is idyllic, it’s not my personal experience. I sometimes feel that I meet them more than halfway, and when I stay in that place very long, I can get resentful. If I am resentful, I am not who I want to be with them, and they do not feel guilt for not behaving as I expect them to. When I have placed too much focus on my agenda with them, my time with them becomes compromised and unsatisfying. Sometimes my Horse is not available for this connection. Although we have schedules with them and we have Agreements with them, sometimes life interferes, instincts interfere, thoughts interfere.
It’s it my belief that we are both evolving our consciousness and communication this lifetime and neither of us is perfect or present all the time. I do think the Horse finds it easier to be present than Human. Being a Human I am sometimes overrun with the cares and obligations of managing my life, which includes providing as good of a life as possible for my Horses and managing a life can bring plenty of pressures and challenges that cause me to be preoccupied. And although the Horse is generally provided for, they do experience their world in their own way. They have physical needs, emotional needs, Spiritual needs, and like us many of them have a deep sense of purpose. Whether or not they are living that purpose is important, and it is our responsibility to understand their reason for being in our life.

The Invitation
While spending time with your Horse, or riding, set a timer to go off a few times during your time together. When it goes off, notice where your attention was. Was it with your Horse or was it on others around you, thinking in the future, the past or things that need attending?
