As human I sometimes find myself in the Underworld. This of course prompts the question, do Horses experience the Underworld too?
I think some of them do. Especially mustangs/wild Horses that abruptly have their natural life taken from them. I am sure abused Horses also enter the Underworld. But perhaps sometimes ‘normal’ Horses go there too. Though I am not sure I am considered ‘normal’, most people don’t know when I am in the Underworld, but I am acutely aware of it.
As Human, I feel like I enter the Underworld when my life does not align with what I intuit or experience as natural, and I find that I am not at home in the world I live in. This leaves me unstable and vulnerable with overwhelming questions and fears.
So, any Horse that is suddenly and thoughtlessly removed from all that they know and placed where Humans have decided they need to be for whatever reason, can spiral into the Underworld.
This is not always obvious. But observing them from the eyes of our soul can reveal the entrapment of the Underworld. Those of us that relate soulfully and with heartfelt commitment to Horses notice the change in our Horse.
And I believe they know when we are in the Underworld. I know my Horses hold space for me when I am there, they energetically connect with me, and I feel their support during this time. I also know they wish for me to spend less time there.
My Horses know my struggles with life and participating in a world that often doesn’t make sense to me. And their counsel to me is to hold fast to the world that does call to me, the one I intuit within my inner being. To place my attention and faith in that world.
As Human this is not always easy as the loudness of life on earth drowns out the call of a world that feels at home to me. One without harshness and synthetic answers that dismiss soulful living.
So, what does a Horse experience in the Underworld? I believe much of the same thing. They have been overwhelmed by a very loud world filled with distraction, pressure, assumptions, shallow relationships, invisibility, alienation, and wistful dreams. Yes, I believe that Horses have dreams about their life. They go here to try to make sense of things. To escape for a while and hope that when they emerge they will have found some answers and stability.
If you normally have a good relationship with your Horse but occasionally, she/he seems to be detached, withdrawn, or low, or jittery, perhaps they have taken a trip to the Underworld. Something or someone has knocked them off balance and they find themselves spiraling into the abyss of questions and disappointment; or confusion that seems to have no answer. Hurts or desires that are unattended.
Perhaps they are sending you the invitation to visit the Underworld with them.
The Underworld is not the enemy, but it is a place of intense emotions and questions. It compels us to look deeply into what really matters. What needs to change or be reinvented.
Who we are in the Underworld shows us our imbalance. Where we have abandoned faith, dreams, or purpose. The Underworld the summons us to identify our truth, our calling, our vulnerability, our tribe, and our choice. The Underworld can bring us back Home to our origins of self.
Most of us feel that we are alone when we are in the Underworld, I suspect Horses feel this as well. For me, because I know my Horses know when I am there, they support me by remaining constant. When we suspect our Horse is in the Underworld, perhaps the greatest Soulution is to support this tumultuous journey. Without questions, without fixing, without demands, or judgment. And let them know that we are here supporting their return.

The Invitation
In your time with your Horse(s), notice if their attitude, their demeanor, or there availability has changed. Then, check in with yourself, have any of these things changed within you? Is this a temporary or surface situation, or are there deep challenges going on? The Underworld may not always look like a great sadness or grief, sometimes Horses and Humans alike wear a mask to conceal our turmoil. It is only with the eyes of the soul can we see below the surface.
