Communication

A lot of people believe that communicating with their Horse is a mysterious anomaly and only a few people can do this. This assumption is erroneous and can make it difficult to communicate.

Some people communicate with their Horse all the time, its instinctual, and they don’t even recognize it as communicating, it’s just part of their daily interaction.

Despite their strength and endurance, Horses seem to be susceptible to a myriad of injuries and ailments, so most Horse People tend to develop a heightened sense of observance with their Horses.

Why are they holding their head that way? Are they ‘off’? They didn’t finish their mash, oh no! Why are they standing like that? Why aren’t they moving? Why are they pacing? Why are they not bearing weight on that leg? Is it the leg or the hoof? She’s looking at her stomach, is it colic?

The list goes on and on and we learn to see these signs as a signal that something is wrong…. or not. We learn to act on these signs quickly because with Horses things can go bad quickly.

But, by becoming internally quiet around our Horse we become aware of the energy they are sending us. Sometimes this is about a physical issue, sometimes emotional or even mental. Sometimes they are just trying to connect with you.

I have the vet check my Horses teeth every year, Mystic is prone to sharp points and Chant came to me with some damage, probably because animal control was coming to seize the Horses, so her breeder had turned 4 stallions and 18 mares lose on the same property, obviously there was mayhem and some injuries. For her it was her poll and her teeth.

When I got her, her outside right incisor was missing and she had some bites on her withers and back, most likely from the stallions trying to do what stallions do.

Enchantress was extremely head shy and very flippy with her head, and it seemed like once she got started it triggered some nerve/nervous reaction and she couldn’t stop.

Last spring I noticed that I was looking at her nose/mouth more and more, this is not normal so at first, I dismissed it. But then that ‘signal’ to look there more was louder. So, I looked inside her mouth. Her center right incisor was loose.

I don’t know if this was a residual from that breeder incident or if something else had happened, but I called the vet out, and she pulled that tooth. Her head flipping lessoned.

It’s important to notice when we are compelled to look at a certain part of their body, or their placement in their stall or pasture, their position within the herd, whatever is drawing your attention more than usual.

This is most likely your Horse communicating with you. A sudden change in behavior is your Horse communicating with you. A feeling of unease around your Horse is your Horse communicating with you. As is a feeling of urgency. And sometimes you may get this while you are not in company with your Horse, but you sense them, they are communicating with you.

I think that people think that having a Horse communicate with them, will be loud and audible, that is rare. Though if they have been ignored, even though not intentional, they may get loud.

If a Horse IS suddenly loud with their behavior around you, stop, quiet your thinking, your reactions, and your assumptions, open your senses and feel the energy coming from your Horse. From your heart or your energy field, ask your Horse to show you what is going on.

Notice where your attention seems to be going, access that first. Take care to not revert to your normal reaction, first, just calmly observe where your attention is called. Are you compelled to look somewhere on their body? Where do you keep going back to? Somewhere in their environment? Do you observe a chaotic feeling coming from their body suggesting mental or emotional upset?

Once you feel like you have narrowed down the draw of your attention, explore what might be happening there.

Through patience and practice this becomes second nature, and you strengthen your communication, strengthening your relationship.

The Invitation

Practice these steps randomly, without a crisis or without urgency. Just be with your Horse without thinking about what they might have to say, open your senses and your energy field and notice where your attention is drawn. Explore that, release and then begin again. That way when there is more urgency in a situation, you are already practiced in communicating with your Horse. Don’t doubt what you feel or notice, don’t dismiss it, just observe it. Allow yourself to receive information not familiar to you and casually follow that line of investigation.
